tried to rescue crumbs from the maple syrup moat
when no one ordered coffee I felt afloat

I’m in Santa Cruz, the real end of this bike journey. On the wharf this afternoon we watched sea lions lazing on docks below us. Pups laying on parents and occasional nuzzling. Peaceful. Two dudes went down for a closer look and lit up cigarettes. Not a second later all the adult sea lions were barking and disturbed, really disturbed. One barked directly at the guy in red flannel. We thought it might bite. Hopes a little two. The guys stayed there. The wind took their ashes and landed them on the seals. Idiots.

And I wish I would have said something. I am writing this to well remember so that next time I do.
