It is getting late at work so I need to be quick with this post. Need to get it out now as I might not be online until next week. This week is Golden Week so I will be away from work until the 8th. Who am I kidding though…I`ll be hitting up some Internet cafe during that time.
Anyway, last Saturday was May Day and it was a fun day too. I went to Sarushima (Monkey Island) with some people for reasons I cannot get into right now. Top secret stuff but I will let you in on it in the future. Sarushima is this wee thing of an island in Tokyo bay, not even a 10 minute ferry ride from Yokosuka. When I go for jogs, I run along the water and I can see it across the way. Nobody lives on the island but it is a popular destination for tourists and BBQ events.

I will summarize the island like this: beach, tiny food store and washrooms, a few food shacks, old road, paths, old stairs, new stairs, tunnels, archways, mussel gatherers, lookout points, caterpillars, a lot of rain, old war base, a lot of green and moss and tangles, rocks, and a deep cave.

It takes about one hour to leisurely walk from one end of the island to the other. When we got to the opposite side, we explored a cave with the help of the camera lights on our mobiles. Then we had a picnic at the cave entrance to stay out of the rain for a while. It was sweet! And yummy! I tried Mochi (餅) for the first time (I think) and I liked it…some people don`t because it is very sticky and heavy in your stomach.

After our adventures we warmed up with some coffee and then I headed home. The rest of the weekend was spent cleaning and studying Japanese…and a little shopping :) I am very determined to become somewhat capable with the language in the next half a year or so. On Thursday a friend and coworker, Momoko, will take me to her parents` house to meet them. I will probably take Japanese lessons from her mother who teaches to foreigners so I am excited!
If I don`t post again before next week…have a good one!!

[...] So of course the first restaurant that I eat at in Vancouver is Japanese. Not intended though. Last night I met Ali for coffee followed by dinner. We walked along W 4th debating our options. I wasn’t helping much with the decision making because I am always pretty bad at decided what I want to eat. Maybe Thai food? There was a new noodle place open – that could be good. We were on the Videomatica block when Ali noticed a restaurant with smaller windows and less flare than surrounding places. It was Japanase but was it just another sushi place? We went in and asked to look at the menu. They had yakimochi and I was sold. (yaki=baked or grilled, mochi=I talk about this already) I should have pictures but I don’t. Maybe next time cause I think I will go back to Zakkushi (website under construction but there are maps for their W 4th and Denman St locations). What did we eat? [...]
