The American Museum of Natural History has a collection of old photos taken around the museum online. The ones of workers creating exhibitions are very interesting:

“Oops, so sorry about that….let me just put these back here…”

Today I declared that spring was official in my heart but I was a little mad at it. Possibly for coming so late and for seeming like it doesn’t really want to be here anyway.

Hi.
It is supposed to be here.

But there have been interruptions.

Though soon enough.

The maze at the shadey vale resort; a spiritual place with no dead ends. Instead you struggle to figure out your pace through the maze and whether to walk and enjoy every path or to give into the desire for instant and make your own trails.

An old stable/farm structure. Similar colours and textures seen on any Saskatchewan road trip as well as numerous landscape paintings adorning home walls.

The town mascot standing tall, unique, and proud along the highway for all to see. This is the Watson Santa Claus. I can also remember the Davidson Teapot, the Moose Jaw Moose, and a large pumpkin somewhere. Has someone made a photo collection of these yet? How will they be analyzed 500 years from now?

Highway intersection. It is fall and everything is golden.

Of course not all is flat. There are some valleys and soft hills like this valley 30 minutes outside of Regina. I think we are all proud of it and it is a beautiful place.

Had my first day back at UBC on Friday. There was hardly anybody there. Went yesterday and today and…well I am back.
I was going to take some pictures around the lab to prove it. But everything is gray and cement. They did paint floor numbers on the walls in the stairwells. I will have to photograph those sometime. Also black and white but I like the design. Instead, some snippets of UBC’s colour.

Summer flowers are still in bloom, leaves are green but starting to turn.

I have no clue what the plant below is but now I know what inspired those hair clips girls wear with their yukatas.

Finally, I’ve been totally enjoying these blue/gray hued plants…because I am getting used to the concrete?

On the alternate walk home from my local train station, kenritsudaigaku (県立大学) or what I like to call “kenritz”, there is a street with a curry shop, a pet store, a steamed meat dumpling shop, and a ramen restaurant. In my time here I have gone to none of them but I think one day I should. I think I take this alternate route (a block away from the regular route) when I am in particularly pensive walking modes and it is easy for me to take the atmosphere in and spit it right back out. Today I stopped by the pet shop and enjoyed the blue glow of tanks and aquariums in the dusk.

I think I have quite the photos of creatures thing going on here. That’s not really intentional but it is making me realize that i must be quite taken by living things that are not humans or vegetation. But it is funny cause I don’t think I am an “animal lover”…I don’t own pets, I don’t awwww over everything, I don’t have much animal-related decor…well…I guess at work there is my moo cow eraser (from highschool but getting old I might have to order more), my red dinosaur from the udon shop, and my neko nyan bou. But that’s it. Hmm…I am going to have to reflect on my animal aesthetics for a bit.

The new camera has been great. Finally, I can take photos at nightime. They may be a bit blurry and this photo was supported by the porchlights of the daycare but…

…at least I have a recognizable image of these lilies. I saw them on my way home from work on Friday night. The smell was so strong from the recent rain.
I also captured some of the bikkuri of this bako:

bikkuri = surprise, bako = box, bikkuri bako (びっくり箱) = surprise box

I should not be writing right now. So much to do. A day that has no end unless I declare “this is enough I can’t take it any further”. Tomorrow I demo something to somebody (maybe sometime I will talk about my work but for now I like being mysterious) and I am a little uncertain, not a little - completely uncertain about how the demo and presentation will progress. Going for the second party of last night’s work party was probably not the greatest idea. I didn’t even talk much, have much to socialize about. The nihonshu was just going back to easily. Possibly stress? Anyway, during golden week oh so long ago one of the things I did was go to a little town close to Tokyo (in Saitama) called Kawagoe. I went with another intern here, Martin, to see a few temples and shrines, old Edo style buildings, and a street lined with candy shops. Prior to going I was worried that I might lose photo taking opportunities due to worry that my travel partner would get annoyed. But then we arrived and Martin pulled a huge black camera (insert brand and model name here…I call them huge black cameras) out of his backpack and I knew it would be a good photo taking day. At one point we turned down a side street to escape a crowd of tourists and I think we both experienced a heart leap into the eyes when we saw a woman’s blue balloon posing for us because it knew how good it looked again the background wall:

That scene made my day.

While doing some research on butterflies, I came across the most amazing picture on Wikipedia.

Go to the large version! Good to look at on a day where life is confusing you and you need a reminder that no matter how alien-like and slimy things are, they are still amazingly beautiful. Also…it’s cool that you can see peoples’ reflections in the chrysalises (chrysali?)…
